David Helms was hiking along the Appalachian Trail in Virginia one lovely day last summer. After trekking for several miles, Helms stopped at a pre-selected place, set his backpack down, and pulled out his global positioning system (GPS) receiver. First checking the GPS to make sure he was at the right spot, Helms left the well-traveled Appalachian Trail and ushwhacked through some dense brush and past tall oak and poplar trees to a narrow pathway in the woods. Plentiful deer tracks and scat told him this was the animal trail he was looking for.
