Gersick’s Punctuated Equilibrium model – also called the Mid-Transition
model – asserts that time and deadlines drive group behaviors. In the first
meeting, the group sets the tone for the group and brainstorms ways to
specifically address the task. As the work progresses, the group then encounters
difficulty with momentum, energy, and inertia. At some point in this lull –
labeled the “Mid-Transition” point – the group gains energy once again, reframes
their view of the task based on work done until this point, and reenergizes their
efforts. In the final phase, the group struggles again with inertia but seeing the
impending deadline, reenergizes around the task using the new frame defined at
the “Mid-Transition” point and brings the group’s work to completion.
