9) Solid-state batteries
1. Chitosan is insoluble in water. This poses a problem in the fabrication of solid-state proton
conducting batteries
2. Chitosan is a biopolymer which can provide ionic conductivity when dissolved in acetic acid
3. The choice of a more suitable electrode material may produce a better battery system
10) Drug-delivery systems
1. Most of the drug content is released soon after administration, causing drug levels in the body to
raise rapidly peak and then decline sharply
-The sharp fluctuation cause unacceptable side effects at the peaks followed by inadequate therapy
at the troughs (Fig. 4)
2. A new dimension is the incorporation of biodegradability into the system
3. The release of drugs, absorbed or encapsulated by polymers, involves their slow and controllable
diffusion from/through polymeric materials
4. Chitosan is non-toxic and easily bioabsorbable with gel-forming ability at low pH
5. Chitosan has antiacid and antiulcer activities which prevent or weaken drug irritation in the
stomach
6. Chitosan matrix formulations appear to float and gradually swell in an acid medium
