Mary Morstan was a governess in London. Her father, Captain Morstan, was in the military and in charge of an Indian regiment in the Andaman Islands. Mary went to Sherlock Holmes because she needed help with a complicated situation and she didn’t know how to deal with it. Dr. Watson begins to fall in love with her and near the end of the book Mary accepts his proposal. Watson describes her as having a calming presence and is warm and supportive. Sherlock Holmes approves of her and believes she is intelligent enough to become a good detective. She is a dynamic character because she is uneasy and afraid throughout most of the book when Holmes is trying to bring justice to the criminals involved in the case that Mary brought to him. However, at the end of the book she is overjoyed to become Watson’s fiancé.
