This paper 1pIoposes a queueing network model for
evaluating the performance of OS1 RPC systems.
The paper also presents fundamental formulae for
computing various perfmnance measures and some
selected performance results obtained when the
model is applied to different implementations built
according to the OS1 IRPC protocol specification.
The queueing model is a closed single chain
multiclass queueing network that consists of a
processor-sharing center modelling thread
contention for the proclessor and two delay centers
modelling times spent thinking and waiting for
responses for invoked lprimitivei respectively. The
queueing network has ii product form solution and
its numerical results are obtained using convolution
algorithnn [4] or the Mean Value Analysis (MVA)
algorithm [5],. The model can be used to predict
performamce measurements such as response times
of Rpc, number of callls processed per time unit,
number of calls waiting in the processor's queue,
etc. for an OS1 RPC implementation and to analyze
the performance impacts of various implementation
options of the: OS1 RPC protocol.
The p a p is organized as follows. Section 2 gives
an overview of the OS1 RPC architecture. Section 3
describes the queueing model. Section 4 analyzes
the model. Section 5 presents numerical examples.
Finally Slection 6 presents the conclusion.
