The acquiescence, after the eighteenth century, of most philosophers, and some scientists,
in Humeian or Kantian accounts of metaphysics, epistemology, and the laws of
nature, need not therefore be held to reflect the actual intellectual imperatives of philosophy
or scientific practice, as opposed to a simple acceptance of the dominant
philosophical trends of their times.
