3. Contextual rules are bound to the context and need
to be interpreted within the context by the pupil,
such as the description of the dosage of
paracetamol and the definition of mortality rate
appearing above. A further example of such a rule
is given below.
The calculation of the body mass index of a
person. In order to classify people as under- or
overweight, we use the concept ‘Body Mass Index
(BMI)’. A person’s BMI index is defined as a
person’s weight (in kilograms) divided by the
square of the person’s height (in metres).
