There has been an emphasis on increasing body size in Division I football players over the past 20 years, and it has been shown that body fat also has increased during this time, especially in linemen (14). Verbal correspondence from
coaches in our program indicate that underclassmen who generally do not play during games are expected to spend extra time in the weight room, and in particular, underclass-men competing for line positions are encouraged to gain weight. In many cases, linemen are asked to increase their body weight by as much as 20 to 30% in their first 2 years on campus with little advice on nutrition or consideration given to body composition changes and potential long-term health effects. A recent NFL study found that as players get larger, fat mass increases more than lean mass, accumulating in the abdominal region (5). In our study, fat mass also increased predominately in the abdominal/trunk region, a location where stored fat is associated with negative health outcomes, which could become a concern for these players as they age. Our institution does not have a dietician available to the athletic department or any type of “training table” program (12) to guide athletes on dietary choices.
