MS has been shown to increase the risk of cardiovascular
diseases such as MI, stroke and mortality. This
increased risk in females was linked to the high rate of
abdominal obesity [27, 28]. The increased prevalence of
MS in patients with LP in our study reveals that these
patients may be at risk for DM and cardiovascular diseases,
which is supported by the presence of significantly higher
levels of hypertension and fasting blood sugar in patients
compared with controls. However, we have not found
increased insulin resistance in our LP patients.
Our study has some limitations, such as the low number
of patients, and larger scale studies are needed to confirm
the findings of our study.
