Much of the progress made towards military de politicisation in Thailand by the end of the 20th century was dramatically reversed by the 2006 coup and subsequent developments. There is no doubt that civil society has come a long way in Thailand since 1973 and that long-term, overt military rule is widely viewed as entirely unacceptable.
