nlis agrees with evidence inthe literature which
indicates that short-term feed withdrawal can lower
the bird's body temperature and increase its ability
to survive acute heat stress. McCormick. Garlich
& Edens ( 1979) reported that fasting of 5-weekold
broilers for 24, 48 or 78 h resulted in
p'rogressively increased survival time when
exposed to heat stress. Smith &Teeter(1987, 1988)
also studied the influence of fasting duration on
broi ler gain and survival, and reported that fasting
interval from 3 to 6 h before heat stress initiation
and totaling up to 12 h daily during significant
heat stress (37°C) reduce mortality significantly.
