Syringopora is a relatively common Mid to Late Palaeozoic genus of colonial tabulate
coral (see Favosites). It is often found in association with the rugose colonial coral
Lithostrotion as part of the Carboniferous 'coral-calcarenite' fossil assemblages, where the
smaller Syringopora probably grew in the shelter provided by the larger corals. Syringopora
consists of a loose fabric of tubes, which can be distinguished from similar corals by the
presence of cross-links joining together neighbouring columns. It displays a very similar
shape to the unrelated modern genus Tubipora, suggesting that it occupied a similar
ecological role in Palaeozoic seas. Syringopora
is a relatively common fossil in
marine rocks from the
Silurian Period.
