With respect to our behavioral and developmental findings with the ECLS-B infants, the
Behavior regulation may comprise a set of foundational skills for later cognitive processes, including cognitive functioning difficulties among older children with FASD (Haley, Handmaker, & Lowe, 2006) as well as social emotional development (Sayal, Heron, Godling, & Edmond, 2007). Our child interaction behavior result with the NCATS at the1–3 drinks per week level is similar to the negative behavioral effects documented in the literature with older children with FASD (Kodituwakku, 2009). These undesirable effects include the total Child Scale on the NCATS (14.25, p < .01) and social engagement (2.59, p < .01)to decrease as the amount of prenatal drinking increases, thus making this a less robustexplanation. Overall, replication is strongly recommended to lend support for our findings
and to determine if the patterns identified are exhibited by independent samples of infants and their mothers.
