For biomass applications the direct processes are typically operated with air as gasification medium. The main direct and indirect processes are:
 Fixed-bed updraft and downdraft;
 Fluidised bed (bubbling and circulating, i.e. BFB and CFB);
 Indirect fluidized bed (steam-blown) and
 Entrained flow
