To our knowledge, this study is the first report of Pd-catalyzed allylic amination in supercritical media. Importantly, we have shown that complete conversion of allylic carbonates to the corresponding carborane amines with excellent regioselectivity may be achieved in scCO2 using NaHCO3 as the acceptor base and P(OPh)3 as the ligand. In addition, we have developed a synthetic route to carborane-containing terpenoids, which might be useful as borondelivery agents for BNCT. It should be noted, that scCO2 exhibits a dielectric constant between 1.1 and 1.5 depending upon density [6]. However, the allylic carbonates 1–3 and N-(ortho-carboran-3yl)-N-methylamine 4 have excellent solubility in solvents with low dielectric constant such as n-hexane. Thus scCO2, as a non-polar solvent, can be used successfully in this type of reactions.
