This study provides the first evidence that there is a dif
ference in the levels o f PA, as m easured by steps taken
during PE classes, among young children (nine years and
younger) falling within different BM I percentile catego
ries. Determ ining effective ways to m axim ize PE levels
o f children who are OW /obese is important. Educators
should structure PE lessons to engage children from all
BMI categories in m oderate to vigorous activity for at
least 50% o f class time. Future research should focus on
identifying the barriers for participation in PE by children
in the overw eight and obese categories.
