On 20 May, bystanders commented: "The soldiers didn say a word, they just let their guns go and fired streams of bullets. They didn't care whether the bullets hit the protesters' bodies or not", and "Later I saw soldiers kicking protesters who had given themselves up and were lying on the ground The people were also angry that Suchinda had accused them of being communists "The military should know they cannot fool the public with that old accusa- tion. The threat of communism is no longer there. They are lying to the public again", one commented
