In conclusion, our research met its objectives by
developing an efficient in vitro high frequency plant
regeneration system for the aquatic plant Hemianthus
callitrichoides. Hemianthus has a high potential for future
environmental studies and can be used in phytoremediation
of polluted water bodies that are contaminated with heavy
metals. The regeneration protocol that was described
in this report could also be used as an effective tool for
functional genomic studies and secondary metabolite
production.
