Open-air and wet markets are included in Euromonitor’s Packaged Food coverage, assuming the retail transaction is subject to retail tax (ie VAT) and the retailer is a legally registered business that also pays taxes. Note that all black/grey market sales are excluded from Euromonitor’s data coverage. Black/grey market is defined as any sale generated within informal retailing, ie those that are untaxed. Euromonitor is able to make estimates for all legal packaged food retail transactions given its unique research methodology. Rather than relying solely on retail audit (ie scan) data – as IRI and AC Nielsen do - Euromonitor accesses and synthesises all published retail sales data for the packaged food industry that is available in the public domain (including from official government statistics, trade associations and industry bodies, trade journals, business press, published company financial reports, filings and other documents, etc) and integrate these findings by speaking directly to industry players, including packaged food manufacturers, trade associations and other industry bodies, distributors and wholesalers, and retailers themselves.
