In Zambia, biomass burning occurs for a lengthier period when compared to other tropical regions, such as South America (Holben et al., 2001) and serves as a key source for pyrogenic aerosols and trace gases. Atmospheric turbidity in western Zambia has been shown to increase in response to biomass burning, with peak turbidities occurring in late August and September (Holben et al., 2001; Eck et al., 2001).
