Variation in other components has little effect on estimated
live BW, and can therefore be inferred based on the size of the animal’s
body. Camera technology can be used to determine the area
of the aerial view of a pig’s body. Using information on the relationship
between area and BW, VIA systems have been developed
and have been found to be accurate enough to estimate live BW
within 5% (Schofield, 1990), but to date, this technology has
required that pigs were separated from a group for analysis as an
individual.
