Never the less, the girls most likely to have a live birth before age 18 reside in rural and remote areas, have little or no education, and live in the poorest households. To assess the patterns and prevalence of adolescent pregnancy—a precondition for effective policies and programs—each country should collect and analyze its own data so that it can identify and target areas with high proportions of girls at risk. On this basis, programs should be put in place, supported by appropriate allocations of resources, to prevent and minimize pregnancy and motherhood among girls, and to manage consequences when they occur.
