In 2011, the University of Guam held a 2-day workshop series, “Advancing Female STEM Faculty in the Western Pacific,” for junior female faculty in the Micronesian region. The aim was to create a network of faculty members across the region and support them with advice, ideas, and advocacy as they progress through the ranks at their respective institutions. This chapter evaluates the specific challenges faced by Pacific Islander women and how the Pacific is viewed by Western cultures. This analysis provides a basis for understanding the structure and content of the workshops along with participant responses to the events, the challenges of connecting women from diverse cultures and geographic areas, and the ways forward for the project.
