The traditional ascetic practices of Korean Buddhism have received much attention both in and outside of Korea, and there are even world famous monks like Brother Soongsan. Indeed, emphasizing philosophical rationalism and having a merciful heart are common values across any religion, regardless of the historical time period.
It may even be possible to combine the ideas of Buddhism with modem technological advances, such as those in physics or quantum mechanics, but for these possibilities to be realized, efforts are needed to modernize Buddhism. Presently, Korean Buddhism, having become too secularized, is not much more than a religion of the pursuit of good fortune, resulting in the weakening of its function of purifying society. Korean Buddhism has continued the Buddhist tradition of East Asia, and now it is time for religious associations, monks, and followers to change so that this religion that seeks truth can continue to prosper.
