A Respectable Woman is a short story written by Kate Chopin in the early 1890s, tells about a woman, Mrs. Baroda who is a respectful one. This story begins when Gaston, Baroda’s husband plans to let Gouvernail stay in his house for one or two weeks. At the first time she heard her husband plan in letting Gouvernail to stay, she feels little interrupted. Furthermore, she doesn’t like Gouvernail as she imagines he is. But, in fact, when she saw him directly, she rather likes him. As time passed away, she is in a deep of like toward him, even, when she feels that she is puzzled by Gouvernail (page 1, line 18) she constantly like him. Till one day where she realizes that her identity of being a respectable woman is battled, she chooses not to go further with her wrong feeling to like Gouvernail, therefore she better quit her home (page 2, line 22) and overcome her internal problem by herself. As the result, when she goes home, she tells her husband that she has overcome her dislike and she permits her husband to invite Gouvernail again. In my opinion, characterization of Mrs. Baroda as the main character in this story is interesting to be discussed. Therefore, in this essay, we concern with the characterization of Mrs. Baroda for some considerations.
