Mechanical wrapping methods have been improved with the advances taking place
in the sale of prepacked cakes. Forgrove BW6 and BW-6P universal overwrapping
machines and the Forgrove 84-H are the most popular wrapping machines used in
cake production. The BW6 and BW-6P are simple, adjustable equipment and are
suitable for a wide range of cakes and cartons of cakes. The principle property is the
self-measuring paper feed, giving substantial savings in wrapping materials. In the
84-H model, the wrapping material is formed into a tube around the article inside
a folding box. Then, rotary crimpers form the cross seals, and the packages are
separated by integral knives. This wrapping equipment is versatile and uses a wide
range of wrapping materials with special attachments for sealing, printing, and type
coding, and it can wrap from 40 to 100 packages per minute depending on the cake
type (Bennion and Bamford 1997).
