As an antioxidant, lycopene has a singlet-oxygen-quenching ability that is twice as high as that of -carotene and 10 times higher than that of vitamin E (Sahin et al., 2014). Lycopene has been shown to provide protection against damage caused by reactive oxygen species (Di-Mascio et al., 1989) and thus prevents damage to cells, tissues and genetic material (Atish and Anil, 2013).
