Communication of goals and expectations is important, and so is the identification and implementation of readily achievable efficiency improvements.
These are best obtained through programs that have a high probability of success with relatively minor technical support. These items should have high reward to cost ratios and be highly visible, and they might include repairing large steam leaks, shutting down unneeded equipment, improving heater efficiency, installing lighting projects, and so on.
These largely overlap with the “operational improvement” and “effective maintenance” categories in the departmental classification.
Very little capital investment is required, although there may be significant expense costs, especially associated with maintenance activities.
