London: The British government is considering whether to bring in a law which could impose life sentences on those found guilty of deliberately passing on Aids, the Independent on Sunday paper said.
The new offence of intentionally giving a person a life-threatening illness would also cover infections such as salmonella and legionnaires disease, it said. The maximum penalty would be life imprisonment.
The proposed law was drawn up after a number of attacks in which people were stabbed with syringes containing the HIV virus which can lead to Aids. Officials said the law would not be aimed at people with Aids who behaved recklessly, but would target those who deliberately and calculatingly intended to cause harm. ---Reuters
