Audience: While the examples will centre on grades 4-7 work, the workshop is suitable for all grade levels. This is the first of 3 workshops. The dates of the two follow-up
sessions will be decided by the group after the first meeting. The workshop will be presented by Melania Alvarez-Adem from the Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Sciences. Melania is an experienced presenter who is very familiar with the Bar Method.
The main purpose of this workshop is to show how the Bar Model method can be used not
only as a problem solving technique, but also to develop in students a deeper understanding of fundamental concepts in mathematics. By using the Bar Model students are able to construct a pictorial representation of known and unknown quantities
and their relationships in a problem, and develop their abilities in problem solving and
mathematical thinking. The Bar Model Method is a key feature of the Singapore mathematics, which has r eceived increasing attention since Singapore attained first place in TIMSS in 1995, 1999 and 2003.
