Decreased odds of developing gestational hypertension,
with increased intake of magnesium, were also observed. Several
observational studies have shown lower serum magnesium levels in the
preeclamptic women [3,42]. It has been proposed that magnesium can
change nitric oxide synthesis, which has an effect on blood pressure
[14]. Moreover, it has been claimed that lower intake of magnesium
may be involved in the development of gestational hypertension, by
reducing prostacyclin to thromboxane ratio [43].
