Friction may arise when the circular, expansive energies of the human psyche are forced into culture's square rules and regulations. At its best, culture represents the cooperation between the Self and the ego. When there is no cooperation, there can be little progress: stagnation occurs if there is too much acquiescence to cultural rules and regulations, but chaos reigns if there is no adherence to cultural forms and templates. This is an interesting, delicate balancing act.
