Recent reviews such as that by Johnston
and Smith (2007) have indicated that the
newer AEDs such as lamotrigine, levetiracetam
and gabapentin are better tolerated
and produce fewer side-effects than the
long-established drugs such as carbamazepine,
phenytoin and sodium valproate;
the newer drugs are therefore recommended
for the treatment of epilepsy in
older adults.
