In recent years, the issue of climate change has grabbed the attention of policymakers at an astonishing rate. Widespread acceptance of the basic science of climate change and recognition of the potential threat that it poses to our ecosystems and way of life has made the pursuit of CO2 reductions a major priority for all concerned.
This article takes into consideration the results of a macrolevel analysis of CO2 emissions, undertaken by the Indian Government, with regard to domestic freight transport. In the absence of a robust methodology and reliable data for computing the quantity of CO2 emitted per ton-kilometer of cargo transported and handled by dry ports, crude estimates had to be considered, often involving extrapolation from research done in foreign countries, especially western European.
