Bonding in Ethane
Bonds arise from the overlap of orbitals on adjacent atoms.
- End-on-end overlap of sp orbitals produces a o- bond (sigma bond)
- All single bonds are bond
- Free rotation is possible around o-bonds.
Each carbon in the ethane molecule. CH,CH is spy hybridized and tetrahedral in shape. Free rotation is possible around the C-C bond. (See nelt slide)
