THE GROWTH OF SOCIAL NETWORKS AND ONLINE COMMUNITIES
Figure 10.1 shows the top social network sites in the United States, which together account for well over 90% of the Internet’s social network activity.
While social networks originally attracted mostly young Internet users, social networks today are not just about teens and college students, but a much larger social phenomenon. Almost 50% of Facebook’s users are 35 and over. Likewise with TWitter. The service sees the most usage from 18- to 34-year olds, rather than younger teens (eMarketer, Inc., 2014d; 2014e).
