They include
bayberry, sweet gale or bog myrrle,
candleberry and wax-myrtle. The flowers
are arranged as catkins, and the berry-type
fruits (known as drupes) often have a thick,
waxy coating. At one time, this wax was
collected for making into candles, leading to
such common names as candleberry, wax-
myrtle and tallow-myrtle.
