The Fantastic Food Challenge (FFC),
developed through a partnership between MSU Extension
and the MSU Communication Technology Laboratory and
funded partially by the USDA, is a set of games designed to
motivate low-income adults to learn about nutrition, food
safety, food preparation, and comparative pricing. Through
the use of digital game play, key concepts from the basic
food-nutrition curricula are cast in a fun, engaging experience.
As participants played the games, they were exposed
to food and nutrition information designed to help them
make more informed food choices in the real world. For
example, participants were asked to direct food objects that
drop from the top to the bottom of the screen to the
appropriate storage place, and they were asked to calculate
what product is most cost-effective based on the size of the
food product, number of servings, and cost of the product.
