Both the initial discussions with couples and the focus group meetings were audiorecorded
(with consent). All of the audio-taped data were transcribed verbatim,
beginning immediately after the first interview, and the transcripts returned to
participants for member checking. Data collection informed data analysis and
vice versa, so the two processes became reciprocally integrated. The move from
data gathering and analysis, to feedback and discussion, to action and evaluation
of the action, did not follow a rigid procedure. Rather codes were noted on
the transcripts and interpretations were discussed with the participants at
