Freight service in Thailand is provided by road, railway, air, coastal shipping and inland waterway. Focusing particularly on rail and road freight demands, it is obvious that the demand of road freight transportation has been continuously growing. The demand of railway mode has also been growing, however, constrained by the limited service capacity. As a result, railway has captured only a minimal share of national total freight transport volume. According to statistics, road and rail modes share 90% and 2% of freight transportation during 2001–2005, respectively [7]. The percentage share of freight
transportation against freight volume is as shown in Table 1.
