3.1. Fecal shedding of pathogens in small ruminants
C. jejuni and Salmonella spp. were detected, at least
once in a small ruminant, in 50.0% (28/56) and 35.7% (20/
56) of the co-grazing groups, respectively. C. jejuni positive
groups were found in both test locations, seasons, and
feeding systems in 44.0% (14/32) MD groups and 58.3%
(14/24) VA groups, 57.1% (16/28) spring and 42.9% (12/28)
autumn groups, and 46.4% (13/28) open and 53.6% (15/28)
protected feeding groups. Similarly, Salmonella positive
herds were found in 31.3% (10/32) MD and 41.7% (10/24)
VA groups, 42.9% (12/28) spring and 28.6% (8/28) autumn
groups, and 28.6% (8/28) open and 42.9% (12/28) protected
feeding groups. The average number of C. jejuni positive
animals in each positive group was 2.371.5 and no group
had Z6 C. jejuni positive animals. However, the average
number of Salmonella spp. positive animals in each positive
group was 1.270.4 and no groups had Z2 Salmonella
positive animals
