Water footprint assessment (WFA) is a method to quantify water use, assess its sustainability and prioritise where to
reduce a particular water footprint and at the same time make it more sustainable, efficient and equitable. The water footprint concept is rooted in the recognition that human impacts on freshwater systems can ultimately be linked to human consumption, and that water shortages and water pollution can be better understood and addressed by considering production and supply chains as a whole (Hoekstra et al., 2011).
