Only one outbreak of Erysipelothrix insidiosa
infection has been described, in a zoological
exhibit in Florida, USA, where it caused generalized
disease associated with mortality in
6–8-week-old spectacled caiman hatchlings,
and dark-brown, crusty skin lesions, 2–4 cm
in diameter, on the back of a very old
American crocodile (estimated to be 100
years old). Treatment with penicillin in the
feed and locally with an iodine spray led to
the cessation of losses in the caimans and
clinical improvement of the adult crocodile
(Jasmin and Baucom, 1967).
