Participants
The sample consisted of N = 344 7th graders (54.9% were female)
from a middle school in the Southeastern US. Their mean age was
12.23 years (SD = 0.46), ranging from 11 to 14 years. Most of them
were Caucasian/White (60.7%), 28.4% were African-American, and
10.9% reported other ethnic backgrounds (e.g., Latino, Asian
American). About one fourth were eligible for free or reduced lunch
(24.8%),1 indicating lower socioeconomic status (SES).
