One of the most extensively studied microorganisms capable of high current densities in a MFC is G. sulfurreducens. This organism has become a model for bacterial processes in a MFC since: it is representative of Geobacter species commonly enriched for from environmental samples using a MFC; pure cultures of G. sulfurreducens have been found to produce near or greater than maximum power of mixed species biofilms ; the full genome sequence is available and is amenable to genetic manipulation ; whole genome microarray analysis is available; and a genome-based in silico metabolic model is available .
