The cornerstone of management is glycemic control.13 Blood glucose levels should be monitored up to 4 times a day: upon awakening (for a fasting level), and 1-hour after the first bite of each meal. The morning fasting glucose level goal is 70 to 90 mg/dL. The postprandial goal is ideally below 120 mg/dL; the upper limit of acceptable is 135 to 140 mg/dL. These values are more stringent for pregnant women than they are for nonpregnant patients with diabetes.
