The design process of the harvester consisted of two phases and took into account field conditions and plant requirements that exist in the Kozani region in Greece (White, 2006). The output of the first phase was the product design specification. In the next step a conceptual analysis was performed the output of which is a prototype design solution shown in Figure 1. The concept works in two stages. The first stage removes the tepals by using suction to align the flower in the vertical plane and then shear the tepal. Following this action the flower head (with no tepals) passes to the next operation and is guided (over a short distance) to twin longitudinal brushes which strip the stigma and the stamens from the stem. A second airflow above the brushes transports the stripped stigma and stamens to a storage container
