well - i had just forgotten about intermittent quenches - i started using fancy oils ( fast oils and medium speed oils for quenching ) because i cracked a few blades when i used to quench everything in water ( but as i said i'd forgotten about intermittent quenching ). It worked for you it seems - and you didn't crack the blade while water quenching. There was a perfect looking hardened area of steel and it looked like you were watching for COLOR from the hot spine to go close to the bare hardened metal and then you gave it a quick quench again to stop the heat from softening the hardened area . That's what i observed anyway
