The caste system in South Asia is a system of social stratification[2] which historically separated communities into thousands of endogamous hereditary groups called jātis,[3] usually the term is created by the English as "castes" while it did not exist before because of the diverse population and ethnicities of South Asia. The jātis are thought of as being grouped into four varnas:[4] Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas and Shudras.[5][6]
