Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) refers to a variety of inflammatory conditions involving the upper genital tract in females. This article aims to increase knowledge of the management of mild to moderate PID by nurse prescribers working in sexual health. An overview of how to identify PID and the types of bacteria that can cause it is provided. The article provides an understanding of the process required to make a diagnosis of PID, and highlights other conditions that may cause similar symptoms. The pharmacological options in treating non-complex mild to moderate presentations of PID are covered.
